The hidden places mould can grow at home and how to tackle it

We all check the bathroom tiles for mould, but when did you last check behind your sofa?

Some areas of your home can be easily overlooked when checking for mould. Here are a few surprising spots worth inspecting, with some advice on what to do if you find mould.

Behind furniture

Large pieces of furniture pushed close to an outside wall can reduce airflow and create a cooler, more humid space behind them.

Check behind wardrobes, beds, sofas and other large items, particularly if they’re against an external wall. Leaving a little space between furniture and the wall can help air circulate.

If you find mould, wipe the surface down carefully using a damp cloth with a mould cleaner, then dry the area completely. Always follow the product instructions, never mix cleaning chemicals, and make sure the room is well ventilated while you work.

Around windows

Water can collect around window frames, seals and sills, especially during colder weather. Check these areas regularly and wipe away any moisture you find. Wiping condensation from windows can also help prevent moisture from building up.

Keeping rooms ventilated by using extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms, and opening windows when appropriate, can also help.

Inside cupboards

Mould can sometimes develop inside cupboards, particularly those under sinks or against colder external walls. Take a look behind stored items and check for damp patches, musty smells or signs of mould.

Avoid overcrowding cupboards so air can move around inside them.

Pipes, seals and hidden corners

Small leaks around pipes, bath seals, shower joints or behind curtains create the ideal conditions for mould to grow. Inspecting these areas as part of your regular cleaning routine helps you catch issues before they spread.

If you find a small patch of surface mould, clean it using a mould cleaner. If there’s a leak under a sink or around pipes, report it to Habinteg Direct at 0300 365 3100 so it can be investigated.
