September is Second Hand September, making it a great time to think about what you already have at home before buying something new.

Before you throw something away, take a moment to ask: could I reuse it, repair it, swap it or pass it on? You might find there’s still plenty of life left in the things you already have.

Reusing, repairing and upcycling things can help reduce waste and save you money too. Here are five ideas to try at home.

1. Reuse what you have

Before throwing something away, think about what else you could use it for.

Glass jars can be used to make lamps or lanterns with battery operated fairy lights, store food or small items, while boxes can be useful for organising cupboards and drawers. Old towels can also be cut up and used as cleaning cloths.

2. Refresh old furniture

If a piece of furniture is looking tired but is still in good condition, you could give it a new lease of life. A thorough clean can sometimes be all it needs. You could also add new handles to a cupboard or drawer, or use leftover fabric to make simple covers or cushions.

If you’re planning to paint or make bigger changes to furniture in your home, check your tenancy agreement first to see what you’re allowed to do.

3. Try second-hand shopping

Second-hand doesn’t just have to mean clothes worn by someone else You can find books, kitchen equipment, furniture, toys and homeware through charity shops, local reuse groups, Facebook, and other online marketplaces.

4. Swap with friends or neighbours

Have something you no longer need but someone else might use? Try swapping items with friends, family or neighbours.

You could exchange books, children’s clothes, plants, kitchen items or other things that are still in good condition.

It’s also worth asking around before buying something you only need occasionally. Someone you know might already have what you need and be happy to lend it.

5. Donate or pass things on

If you have things you no longer use, consider whether someone else could benefit from them. Charity shops, community groups and local reuse schemes may accept your unwanted items, as long as they’re in suitable condition.
