Asbestos might sound like something from a history book, but did you know that it could still be lurking in over 1.5 million homes across the UK?
In fact, it was commonly used in construction in the 1930s and 1940s and famously appeared as “snow” on the set of The Wizard of Oz.
Like Dorothy, we know there’s no place like home, which is why it’s important to understand the risks of asbestos and how to keep your home safe.
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral, which was used in a large variety of building materials throughout the 20th century.
Asbestos fibres are too small to see with the naked eye, which is why it can often go unnoticed in walls, ceilings, pipes, and even some floor coverings. If these fibres are disturbed, for example by drilling, sawing, sanding, or breaking materials, they can become airborne.
Breathing in asbestos fibres can lead to a number of serious health conditions, including asbestosis, as well as cancers like mesothelioma and lung cancer. Symptoms can take decades to appear, which is why asbestos exposure is so dangerous.
Materials containing asbestos that were used in domestic properties include:
If your home was built in 2000 or earlier, it may contain one or more of these materials, but they are safe as long as they remain in good condition and are left undisturbed.
Safety precautions
Following key safety measures will avoid any potential for disturbing areas of the home that may contain asbestos.
Always seek advice from Habinteg before carrying out any home improvements and make sure you have written permission before starting work.
Do not touch or disturb any materials that might contain asbestos, even small cracks or chips.
If you’re unsure, we can inspect your home and advise if asbestos is present and if any special precautions are required.
If you notice flaking, crumbling, or any other suspicious materials in your home or communal areas, let us know immediately so it can be dealt with safely.
