How you can report ASB and what happens next

If you're experiencing anti-social behaviour from a neighbour or someone in your community, it's important that you know how to report what's happening and how Habinteg can help you.

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) is behaviour that causes harassment, alarm or distress, or creates a nuisance for people in their homes or neighbourhoods.

This behaviour can include persistent noise that causes a disturbance, threatening or intimidating behaviour, harassment, hate incidents and misuse of shared spaces.

But not every disagreement or noise complaint is classed as anti-social behaviour. Everyday sounds, such as children playing or doors opening and closing, are part of day to day life.

If you're unsure whether something counts as ASB, you can contact our Customer Services Team at Habinteg Direct - on 0300 365 3100 or by emailing direct@habinteg.org.uk - to explain what's happening and get advice.

Keep a record

If a neighbour's behaviour is causing you problems, you can try speaking to them calmly first, as long as you feel safe doing so. They might not realise their behaviour is affecting you.

If the behaviour continues, start keeping a record of what happens. Write down the dates and times of incidents, what took place and how it affected you. Include details of any steps you've taken to resolve the issue.

Habinteg has an anti-social behaviour diary sheet you can use to record incidents. This information can help us understand the situation and decide what action may be needed.

How to contact Habinteg

The easiest way to report ASB is by using Habinteg's online ASB reporting form.

Include your name, address and contact details, along with as much information about the incidents as you can. You can report anonymously, but this may limit what Habinteg can do if further information or evidence is needed.

You can also speak to your local Neighbourhood Co-ordinator. Contact Habinteg Direct on 0300 365 3100 or email direct@habinteg.org.uk to get their contact details if you don’t have them.

If you witness a crime, report it to the police. Call 999 in an emergency or 101 for non-emergency matters.

What happens next?

Once you report ASB, Habinteg will assess the information and classify the case according to its seriousness.

An action plan will be created to set out the steps needed to address the problem. Any action taken will depend on the nature of the behaviour and the evidence available.

Habinteg may try to resolve the issue informally, arrange mediation, agree acceptable behaviour with those involved or take legal action in more serious cases.
