How to access support for home aids and adaptations

If you’re disabled or have mobility challenges, Habinteg may be able to cover the cost of a home adaptation or help you apply to your local council for funding to carry out a major adaptation.

Adaptations can make your daily life easier and help you to stay independent.

Changes can be small, such as grab rails or lever taps, or you might need a larger improvement like a stair lift, walk-in shower or door entry system.

What does it involve?

Habinteg’s adaptations service starts with a conversation about what might help and what support is available. Our team can guide you through applications, explain funding options and arrange works where possible.

We can help you apply for a grant, connect you with other services, or in some cases pay for the adaptation directly.

Any Habinteg tenant or permanent household member with a long-term condition, who finds everyday tasks difficult or is limited by their home, can request adaptations. There is no minimum length of tenancy, and each request is considered individually.

Types of adaptations

Minor adaptations cost up to £1,500, are normally completed within a few weeks, depending on availability, and are often totally funded by Habinteg.

Major adaptations cost more than £1,500 and are usually funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant from your local council.

An occupational therapist will normally carry out a home assessment to confirm what is needed, and this is usually arranged by your local council, but you’re the best person to decide which adaptation could help, and if you’re unsure, your Neighbourhood Co-ordinator or our Customer Services Team can provide advice or a referral.

How to get started

If you want to apply for an adaptation to your home, speak to your local Neighbourhood Team or contact the Customer Services Team on 0300 365 3100 or direct@habinteg.org.uk.
