Habinteg’s response to Welsh Government consultation on mandatory housing quality standards

Habinteg has submitted its response to the Welsh Government’s consultation on Mandatory Quality Standards for new, rehabilitated and existing homes.

The consultation proposes to set the Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) as the mandatory standard for all existing social housing with a revised Development Quality Requirements (DQR) as the mandatory standard for new and rehabilitated housing where Welsh Government subsidy is provided.

The Welsh Government state in the consultation that: ‘ Homes should be flexible, responsive to the changing needs of the occupants and meet the changing needs of variety of households who will occupy the building over its life.

Habinteg strongly supports the consultation proposal to build all new social housing to the Lifetime Homes Standard and ‘where it is practical and cost effective to do so, consideration should be given to incorporating some, or all, the Lifetime Homes Standards (LHS) into (existing) dwellings.’
