Habinteg partners with Hounslow to boost borough’s accessible homes

Habinteg, in partnership with London Borough of Hounslow, unveiled its new scheme in Brentford yesterday, which will help address the demand for accessible housing in the borough.

Recognising the high demand for affordable and accessible social housing in Greater London, Habinteg has worked with the London Borough of Hounslow to unlock the potential of several sites and to foster inclusive neighbourhoods.

Through a strategic partnership with Hounslow, the site in Brentside, Brentford is one of 13 local sites to have been secured, and the first to be launched.

The development comprises six new homes: three wheelchair accessible bungalows and three two-bedroom accessible and adaptable houses, aimed at catering to a diverse range of residents.

The features of the wheelchair accessible bungalows, known as M4(3), include fully wheelchair accessible kitchens with adjustable sections of worktop for a sink, hob and a side opening oven, a fully wheelchair accessible bathroom with level access shower, and a power-assisted front door.

The features of the accessible and adaptable houses, known as M4(2), include a step free approach, widened door widths to facilitate a wheelchair user, and draining installed to the main bathroom to allow for future installation of a level-access shower.

Designed by Levitt Bernstein architects and developed by Star Contractors Ltd., the development emphasises practicality and community engagement.

Nick Apetroaie, Chief Executive Officer of Habinteg, says: “At Habinteg, we are delighted to unveil the first of 13 accessible and adaptable schemes through our partnership with London Borough of Hounslow. It’s great to see a local authority taking proactive steps to tackle the accessible homes crisis, and we hope that this scheme can become a model for similar developments across the country.

"By transforming neglected spaces into vibrant, inclusive communities, we're not just building homes, but opportunities for individuals to thrive. The scheme in Brentford is a testament to our dedication to creating spaces that empower and support all residents whatever their needs.”

Councillor Tom Bruce, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Development, says: “I am pleased to commemorate the completion of the Upper Butts project. This development displays our commitment to providing much-needed housing options. It's a proud moment for us all as we witness the transformation of a garage site into accessible and affordable housing for our residents to thrive and prosper.

"I would like to thank our partners Habinteg Housing Association for all their work and for helping us transform this site to better serve the needs of our community.”
