Send condensation packing before mould moves in

Having a foggy window in your home might seem harmless, but the moisture on the windowpane can cause problems if it lingers.

Condensation can collect on walls, windows, and furniture, creating the right conditions for mould to grow.

The good news is, there are a few steps you can take to help control moisture and keep your home dry before mould becomes a problem.

How condensation forms

Condensation happens when warm, damp air meets a cold surface.

Everyday activities like cooking, showering, drying clothes, and even breathing all add moisture to the air.

In winter, when windows are closed and rooms are kept warm, that moisture settles on surfaces and creates the perfect environment for mould.

Spot it early

Catching condensation before mould appears is key. Look out for foggy windows, damp patches on walls, peeling wallpaper, or a faint musty smell.

Mould often starts in hidden spots, such as corners, behind furniture, around window frames and even behind toilet cisterns. If you see evidence of moisture build-up regularly, it’s a clear sign that your home needs more airflow.

Everyday routines

Keeping on top of a few regular tasks around your home can help prevent condensation from building up.

Managing air flow is one way to prevent condensation from settling. Open trickle vents if your windows have them and leave a small window slightly open when cooking or showering.

Switch on kitchen and bathroom fans and leave them running for a few minutes after you’ve finished washing. And keep doors closed while steam is rising. This will stop water droplets spreading into other rooms.

You could also:

  • Use your clotheshorse (if you absolutely must) in a room with a window that is slightly open. But don’t dry clothes on radiators, as this just adds moisture to the air.
  • Pull furniture a few centimetres away from walls so air can circulate, and wipe down wet windows and sills each morning.
  • Place small open containers of baking soda on windowsills or in corners to help absorb excess moisture.
  • Maintain a steady, low level of heating to reduce cold surfaces where condensation can settle.
