Small everyday steps to boost your mental health

Mental Health Awareness Week (11-17 May) is a chance for us all to pause and focus on our wellbeing.

Our mental health is a big part of our everyday life as it affects how we think, feel, and cope and can be influenced by things like work, money, relationships, stress, and where you live.

As this year’s awareness week theme is “Take Action”, we’ve come up with five things you can try this week to support your mental wellbeing.

1. Spend time outside

Being outdoors can have a positive impact on your mood. You could go for a short walk, spend time in a local green space, or simply sit outside for some fresh air if that feels right for you.

If you don’t already do it, think about spending regular time outside. It can help reduce stress and support your overall wellbeing.

2. Stay connected with others

If you’ve been feeling isolated, talking to someone you trust can help you feel more supported and make things feel more manageable. This could be a friend, family member, or neighbour.

Building connections in your local area can also help. Getting to know a neighbour on your scheme can create a more friendly and supportive place to live.

You can also look out for local community events, which are often shared on your local council website or noticeboards in your area.

3. Keep a simple routine

Having a routine can help bring structure to your day and reduce stress by helping you stay organised, focus your time, and know what to expect each day. Completing small tasks around your home can be a surprisingly effective mood booster giving you both a sense of achievement and a calmer place to relax.

Think about having regular mealtimes, getting up at the same time each day, or planning small regular daily tasks.

4. Take breaks from screens

Spending too much time online – whether it’s on a computer or on a phone can sometimes lead to us feeling overwhelmed.

Taking regular breaks from screens, especially in the evening, can help you relax and improve your sleep. Starting your day with at least 30 minutes where you don’t look at a screen can set you up for a better day, or you could also try switching off devices for a set period each day.

5. Do something you enjoy

Making time for activities and people you enjoy being with can help improve your mood and give you a sense of achievement.

This could be taking part in a hobby you already have or trying something new with a friend such as a creative activity, learning a skill, or joining a local group.

Setting aside time for something you enjoy can give you a break from everyday pressures and help you feel more positive and recharged.

How to find support

If you’re struggling with your mental health and need support, contact your GP. They will be able to help you access the right mental health support or services.

There are also trusted organisations in the UK that offer advice and support, including Mind and the NHS Every Mind Matters website, which provides tips and guidance on looking after your mental wellbeing.
