Safe BBQs and summer socialising in shared spaces

Summer is fast approaching, which means more time outdoors, more opportunities to enjoy shared spaces and more people firing up the barbecue.

But before you get the burgers sizzling, it's worth making sure you're keeping yourself, your family and your community safe.

Here are some ways to help everyone enjoy the warmer weather.

1. Choose a safe BBQ location

Always place your barbecue on a flat, stable surface outdoors. Keep it well away from fences, sheds, trees, garden furniture and anything else that could catch fire.

Never use a barbecue on a balcony, near building entrances or in enclosed areas. Flames, sparks and heat can spread more quickly than you might expect.

If you're using a disposable barbecue, don't put it directly on grass as the heat underneath can scorch the ground or even start a fire.

2. Be mindful of your neighbours

Communal spaces are shared by everyone, so it's important to be considerate.

Try to position barbecues where smoke is less likely to drift into neighbouring homes and keep noise levels reasonable, particularly later in the evening.

3. Never leave BBQs unattended

It only takes a few seconds for something to go wrong. Stay close to your barbecue while it's lit and never leave it unattended.

If children or pets are nearby, make sure they're kept well away from the cooking area.

4. Keep shared spaces clear

Communal walkways, stairwells and balconies should always stay free from clutter. BBQs, chairs, bikes and other items can block escape routes if there's an emergency.

Shared outdoor spaces are there for everyone, so it's important to use them responsibly.

6. Have an escape plan

If friends or family are visiting, make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if there's a fire. Keep door and window keys somewhere they are easy to find and make sure escape routes stay clear.
