At Habinteg, we believe that having a suitable home is key to helping people with learning disabilities live independently and feel part of their communities.
A learning disability affects the way a person understands information and learns new skills. It can also affect how someone communicates and carries out everyday tasks. Some people may need a lot of support, while others live independently with little or no support.
Many people with learning disabilities want the same things as everyone else – a home of their own, privacy and the chance to be part of a local community where they feel safe and able to make their own choices.
Be aware
People with learning disabilities can and do face barriers in everyday life.
That’s why events like Learning Disability Awareness Week (15–21 June 2026) are needed to raise awareness of people with learning disabilities and their experiences, and ensure they are seen, heard, valued, and supported to live full, independent lives.
A suitable home plays an important role in supporting independence and everyday life.
Accessible housing matters
The place where you live can affect how easy it is to manage daily tasks - such as showering, making breakfast, getting to the bathroom - maintain routines and take part in local life.
A recent report by the National Development Team for Inclusion, looked at the experiences of people with learning disabilities living in accessible or supported housing.
It found that having a suitable home helped them feel more independent, because it gave them more freedom over everyday choices.
This reflects a wider understanding of the role housing plays in people's lives. As the government's National Disability Strategy states, "A decent home is the foundation for an independent life."
One tenant living in supported housing described the independence their home gave them. They said: “Freedom…. I can go out when I want and come in when I want… I can cook when I want and have it how I want.”
This is why accessible housing is so crucial. It plays a vital role in helping people with learning disabilities live on their own terms.
