Sometimes small issues in the home can be sorted quickly without needing to report a repair to our Customer Services Team. Knowing what you can safely do yourself can save time and keep your home running smoothly.
Here’s five examples of things you may be able to fix yourself, and when it’s time to submit a repair request instead.
1. Resetting a tripped fuse
If the electrics go off in part of your home, it may be a tripped switch in your fuse box. A tripped switch is a built-in safety mechanism in your fuse box (also known as a consumer unit).
It automatically cuts off the electricity to a specific part of your home when it detects a dangerous electrical fault or an overload. This can sometimes happen if too many appliances are being used at once.
You can usually reset the switch by following the instructions on the fuse box. If it keeps tripping, or you’re unsure, it’s best to report it to Habinteg’s Customer Services Team so it can be checked. Email them at direct@habinteg.org.uk.
2. Bleeding a radiator
If one of your radiators feels warm at the bottom, but cold at the top, there may be air trapped inside. ‘Bleeding’ the radiator can help it heat up more evenly. This involves using a radiator key to release the air slowly. Remember, only attempt this when the heating is off. Watch this video on how to do it safely.
If you aren’t confident doing this, or the issue keep coming back, email the Customer Services Team about it at direct@habinteg.org.uk.
3. Unblocking a sink
Slow-draining sinks are often caused by a build-up of debris. Using a plunger, wire drain blocker or drain snake may help clear minor blockages.
It’s best to avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners where possible, but if the sink stays blocked or affects other drains, it’ll need reporting to Habinteg.
4. Replacing light bulbs
In many homes, replacing standard light bulbs is something you can do yourself. Make sure the power is switched off before changing a bulb and use the correct type for your fitting.
If a light fitting isn’t working, or bulbs keep blowing, please let the Customer Services Team know so we can make an appointment for one of our surveyors to go out and take a look.
5. Checking smoke alarms
Smoke alarms should be tested regularly by pressing the test button. If they the alarm does not sound, check and replace the battery if it’s removable.
If the alarm still doesn’t work, or if it’s a hardwired unit, report it to our Customer Services Team so it can be inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
Reporting a repair
While small fixes can sometimes be handled at home, anything involving gas, major electrics, leaks and structural issues should be reported to Habinteg straight away.
If you’re ever unsure about anything, it’s always better to check with us first rather than try to fix something that might need professional attention.
