What is asbestos & why should you be aware of it?

To help keep you and everyone else in your home safe, it’s important that you let Habinteg know if you need to do any building work or make any changes to your property, internally or externally.

Asbestos was a widely used material within commercial buildings, machinery and homes until 1999, when it was banned. If it’s in good condition, and not damaged or disturbed, it does not pose a risk to your health.

However, if asbestos fibres are disturbed – for example through building work - and they are inhaled or swallowed, they may increase the risk of several serious diseases, including asbestosis, mesothelioma, and a variety of cancers.

Changes to your home

Our robust permissions process is in place to keep everyone safe. This means you have to request permission before you carry out any major works within your home.

One of our building surveyors may be required to attend your property to ensure you are kept safe and that the works you are completing do not require a specialist contractor to either manage or remove asbestos.

If you believe you’ve damaged or disturbed asbestos within your home, you should ensure that you restrict access to the area, and call Habinteg Direct on 0300 365 3100 immediately.

Our emergency process will kick in and we’ll be able to get a surveyor out to your home to review the situation and help keep you safe.

If you have any queries about asbestos within your home, please contact Habinteg Direct on 0300 365 3100.
