Habinteg tenant Suzie Dru Dury from Wyle Lodge, was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at birth, but she wants people to see how being disabled shouldn’t mean you can’t enjoy life, go on adventures and achieve your goals.
With help from her sister Rosie, Suzie recently had her book, Wheels of Independence published and it’s available on Amazon.
She said: “I decided to write a book as I work better when I have something to aim for and I wanted another challenge in my life.”
Wheels of Independence contains several original poems written by Suzie including one which lends its title to the book.
Wheels of Independence
A bright idea came to my mind one day;
"WATCH OUT" A book is on the way;
My mind is buzzing I have to say;
I will start without delay.
I load "WordPad" on my PC;
Writing on this, is easier for me;
My monitor is big you see;
So I'm able to read the print easily;
And alter the paragraphs frequently.
I've never done a book before;
Off to the internet I go to explore;
What came up didn't interest me at all;
So It was time to withdraw.
I'll give Rose a call she'll be a good mentor;
I need further assistance after all,
I've hit a brick wall, and I'm about to fall;
One day I will be on the ball.
Within a minute my confidence came back;
"WOW, it's a YES, I am now on the right track;.
I can achieve the goal I’ve been looking at;
I'm so thankful for that, and the good chat.
I take myself down memory lane;
Instantly I remember pain;
Which was a tremendous strain;
I'm a positive person in the main;
And I have so much more to gain.
Then the title of my book came;
Oh I'm on my good luck chain;
I'm hoping this is where I will remain;
"Wheels of Independence" well done brain;
It's moving faster than a train.
Having a disability is hard to explain;
It's like constantly losing a game;
The frustration is always the same;
This is a shame but, no ones to blame;
"Determined Suz" is a nickname.
I have managed to Ski ;
And I live independently;
Challenges are good for me;
It keeps my mind active you see;
Which helps me move forward happily.
Writing has helped me so much actually;
How I feel comes out automatically;
And all my worries disappear rapidly;
I've finished "Wheels of Independence” finally.
"Everyone has knock-backs in life, but when you have a disability you have to work that bit harder. I don't like giving up,” Suzie said.
