While the Government ended its Cost of Living payments in early 2024, there are still other benefits, grants and schemes that you can apply for to support you with rising living costs.
We've brought together some information to remind you about what help is available.
Universal Credit
It’s worth checking if you are eligible for Universal Credit, which is a monthly government payment to help with living costs. You may be eligible for it if you’re on a low income, out of work or you cannot work.
How much you’ll get paid depends on a number of things including your age, if you’re working and how much you earn. It can range from £311.68 to £617.60 per month.
Visit www.gov.uk/universal-credit to check your eligibility and more information.
Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP)
If you're getting Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit, but still can't afford your housing costs, you may be eligible for a DHP. This is a one-off lump sum payment from the council to help with rent, tenancy deposits, or other housing expenses.
Your council will decide if you’re eligible for a DHP, how much you will be paid and for how long you will receive the payment.
For more information, visit www.gov.uk/government/publications/claiming-discretionary-housing-payments.
Household energy bills
There is support available to help with your energy bills this winter. You may be eligible for one of the following schemes:
Local Food Banks and Charities
If you're struggling to afford food or essentials, there are charities and food banks that provide free meals and groceries.
The Trussell Trust
The Trussell Trust offers three days’ worth of meals for individuals and families. You'll need to be referred for a food voucher that is then exchanged at the food bank for a food parcel.
To find your nearest food bank, visit www.trusselltrust.org/get-help/emergency-food or call their helpline on 01722 580 180.
The Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN)
The IFAN helps locate independent food banks that are not part of the Trussell Trust network. Use the search tool on their website at www.foodaidnetwork.org.uk/our-members to find a local food bank.
Money and debt
If you’re dealing with debt or need advice on managing your money, there are free services that can help.
Citizens Advice
Citizens Advice is a charity that provides free, confidential debt management and support.
If you're struggling with debt, they can advise on which debt is the most important to focus on, negotiate with creditors, and set up manageable repayment plans.
For more information, visit their website at www.citizensadvice.org.uk or call their debt helpline at 0800 240 4420.
StepChange
StepChange is another charity offering free debt advice and solutions to help reduce, write off, or manage debts through long-term repayment plans.
You can access their services online at www.stepchange.org/start.aspx or by calling 0800 138 1111.
