My adaptable home, my beautiful garden!

A mum and daughter sitting in their garden

Bernadette Abbassi, our tenant in Rotherham, lives in an adaptable wheelchair-friendly home on Dukes Place complex.

She’s shared with us a story about her beautiful garden at home which has been both a sanctuary and her happy place since her family moved in 1988. A cute robin in someone's garden

“My mum first moved here in 1988 because she was a wheelchair user and needed an accessible home.

When she passed away, I was lucky to get the lease to our home as I also suffer from hip problems that have often made mobility difficult.

Having an adaptable home with wide doors and quick access to accessible sockets really helps on days when I’m struggling with my mobility.

Having a garden to go to and watch our plants and flowers grow and see a variety of beautiful wildlife is so therapeutic. Our tall palm trees attract a variety of bird species such as blue tits, sparrows, robins, and more. Beautiful flower patch in a garden

We also have squirrels that come into our garden and are a delight to watch.

My daughter Francesca is growing tomatoes and carrots to help us become more self-sufficient too.

I enjoy spending time sitting in the garden and looking at what we have grown.

We feel so fortunate to be living in Rotherham in our lovely little Habinteg bungalow.

Very much appreciated!”
