While on TV and in adverts, Christmas is always a picture of happy family get-togethers and parties with friends, the reality is that for many people it can be a lonely time.
Around 27% of UK adults feel lonely at least sometimes, however there are ways we can all connect with others.
Community activities
1. Volunteer locally: Helping others on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or Boxing Day at a charity event can lift your mood.
Search local papers or look for opportunities with national charities such as Crisis at Christmas, The Salvation Army, Age UK, The Trussel Trust, British Red Cross.
2. Find community events: Check local papers, church boards, community notice boards, or council websites for:
Community Xmas dinners: Charities like Re-engage provide online searches to match volunteers with local opportunities.
Festive walks: Walking groups or local park initiatives hold meetups over Christmas, like Park Run. Search local papers, community notice boards, and leisure centres for information.
3. Check out what’s on at pubs and social clubs: Nacro, an organisation that provides practical help and personalised support with education, housing, justice and health and wellbeing services, has a list of organisations providing free Christmas dinners. Visit www.nacro.org.uk.
Digital connection
If you can’t meet loved ones in person, technology can help you stay connected:
Digital dinner date: Share a meal over a video call.
Three messages: Reach out to three people you haven’t spoken to in a while.
Virtual game night: Play simple games like Pictionary or Charades via Zoom, Google Meet, or WhatsApp.
Feeling SAD?
For anyone experiencing winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), try to embrace the light.
Gentle exercise such as walking or simple chores can lift your mood and fight sluggishness. SAD is treatable, so if symptoms persist, speak to your GP or contact:
• The Samaritans: Call 116 123 (free, 24/7)
• The Silver Line helpline: Call 0800 4 70 80 90 (for older people).
• MIND Infoline: Call 0300 123 3393.
* Data is from a combination of reports from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the Community Life Survey, and Campaign to end loneliness.
