Government seek disabled people’s views on impact of Brexit on vital services

The British Government has launched an open consultation to understand the impact that ending the freedom of movement in Europe has had on disabled people who need help with day-to-day activities - and they need your views.

Freedom of movement

Freedom of movement meant that citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland had the right to move freely between European Union territories.

However, Britain’s decision to leave the European Union has meant that British citizens and other European nationals are no longer able to move around with ease between Britain and other EU member states.

The Government has asked the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to head the independent inquiry looking at the effect that the ending of freedom of movement in Europe will have on adult social care.

What is the MAC investigating?

The MAC has specifically been asked to look at the impact this change will have on:

  • the adult social care workforce: specifically skills shortages and how it affects roles like care workers, registered nurses and those in managerial functions
  • visa options for social care workers
  • long term consequences for workforce recruitment, training and employee terms and conditions.
