Going on holiday? Travel insurance is a must.

With summer on its way, whether you’ll be on a staycation or holidaying abroad, be sure to book your travel insurance.

Without it, your holiday could end up way more expensive than planned.

Why book travel insurance?

Travel insurance can help you recover unexpected costs. A good policy can cover:

  • your medical costs if you get ill or injured while on holiday or your illness or injury prevents you from being able to travel
  • cancellation of your trip for a reason beyond your control
  • the cost of your luggage if it gets lost, damaged, stolen or delayed
  • losses if your home gets broken into and your property is stolen while you’re away.

Get the right protection

All travel insurance policies are not the same, so ensure you choose a travel insurance policy that’s right for you.

When choosing your policy, here are a few things it would be wise to do:

  • be honest about any medical conditions you may have, otherwise if you need to make a claim, it may be rejected
  • check that it covers the country or region you’re travelling to
  • check that you do not already get travel insurance through your bank account
  • see if you need to include any add-ons. For example, if you’re going on a skiing holiday, you’ll need winter sports cover, or if you’re going on a cruise you’ll need a specific policy to ensure you’re fully covered
  • check whether it works better for you to have a combined policy if travelling with your family or partner, or whether it’s better to take out individual policies. While it’s often cheaper to take out a combined policy, if one person in the group is over 65 or has a medical condition, it can increase the price of the policy for all.

And be sure to read the small print so that you’re not left with any surprises if you need to make a claim.

Better safe than sorry

There’s one thing for sure with all insurance policies, it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

So be sure to book your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday, so that you’re covered against the unexpected.
