Get up to £4,000 a year in tax-free childcare

If you have children aged three to four, the government has a few initiatives to support you with the cost of childcare.

£1,000 tax-free childcare

If you’re the parent of a disabled child, you can get up to £1,000 every three months - that’s a maximum of £4,000 a year - to help with your childcare costs.

If your child isn’t disabled, you can benefit from up to £500 every three months - up to £2,000 a year - to help with the costs of your child’s care.

How tax-free childcare works

You’ll need to register for an online childcare account. Once you’re set up, the government will put in £2 for every £8 you pay into the account to help you pay your approved childcare provider.

Get up to 30 hours of free childcare

Families with children between the ages of three and four can get 15 hours of free childcare a week during term time. And, if you live in England, you may be able to get up to 30 hours of free childcare for your three to four year old.

Qualifying for free childcare hours depends on:

  • whether you’re working
  • your income (and your partner’s income, if you have one)
  • your child’s age and circumstances
  • your immigration status.

Other childcare support

If your child isn’t aged three to four, the government may still be able to help reduce the amount you pay for childcare.
