Report domestic abuse to get help and advice

Everyone deserves to live in a home that is safe, secure, and free from fear or violence.

Unfortunately, domestic abuse can happen to anyone, which is why it’s important to recognise the signs, know where to get help, and report it so action can be taken.

In 2024, around 8 in 10 reported domestic abuse cases  led to charges, which is up from 7 in 10 in 2023. This is the highest rate since records began in 2015, meaning more people are getting the protection and support they need.

Recognising domestic abuse

Domestic abuse is when a partner, ex-partner, or family member behaves in a way that hurts, scares, or controls someone.

Abuse isn’t just physical violence. It can also be emotional, like being shouted at or bullied, and can include threats, pressure, or being forced to do things you don’t want to do.

Sometimes, it means being controlled like not being allowed to see friends, go out, or make your own choices. It can also involve money, such as taking away your wages or stopping you from spending your own money.

Other forms of domestic abuse include harassment, stalking, trafficking, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, child abuse and 'honour-based' abuse.

Reporting abuse

If you're worried about the safety or wellbeing of a child or adult within your community, it’s important to report it.

If someone is in immediate danger, you should call 999 to speak to the police.

If you’re concerned that someone may be experiencing or is likely to experience abuse or neglect, and they’re not in immediate danger, contact your local authority ’s social services department.

Organisations like the NSPCC  can also offer advice and support if you’re concerned that a child may be experiencing or is likely to experience abuse or neglect, and they’re not in immediate danger.

If you or a neighbour is experiencing domestic abuse, you can report your concerns to a member of Habinteg staff. Our Neighbourhood Teams are here to help and can support you with practical steps, including relocation if needed.

If the concern involves a Habinteg staff member, you can ask to speak with our Executive Management Team.

Please see our domestic abuse policy at www.habinteg.org.uk/domestic-abuse  for more information.
