Christmas is a time for joy and celebration, so let’s ensure it stays that why by using candles, lights, and decorations safely.
Here’s a few safety tips that’ll ensure you enjoy the festivities without risking a fire.
Christmas trees
If you choose a real Christmas tree , make sure it’s fresh. The needles should be green and hard to pull off. Place your tree in a sturdy stand and keep it well-watered so it does’tn dry out.
Place the tree away from heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces, and electric heaters. Make sure it doesn’t block exits or walkways.
If you prefer an artificial tree, check that it’s labelled as fire-retardant. This doesn’t mean it won’t burn, but it will resist flames for longer.
Fairy lights and candles
Before using any lights, inspect them carefully. Look for frayed wires, loose bulbs, or cracks in the cable. If you find any damage, replace the lights immediately.
Always use lights that are approved for indoor or outdoor use, depending on where you want to place them. Avoid plugging too many lights into one socket, as this can cause overheating.
Switch the lights off before going to bed or leaving the house. LED lights are a safer choice, as they stay cooler and use less energy.
If you’re using candles, place them on a stable surface where they can’t be knocked over. Keep them away from curtains, decorations, and anything that could easily catch fire.
Remember, never leave a burning candle unattended. If you have children or pets, consider using battery-powered candles instead. They provide the same warm glow without the fire risk.
And make sure all candles have been blown out before heading to bed..
Kitchen safety
The kitchen is often the busiest room during the festive season, where the extra cooking and baking can lead to distractions.
If you’re faced with a pan fire, never use water to put it out. Instead, turn off the heat and cover the pan with a lid to smother the flames.
Make sure you have a working smoke alarm in the kitchen and test it regularly.

If a fire starts in your home, act quickly and stay calm.
Get everyone out of the house immediately, and close doors behind you to help slow the
Do not try to tackle the fire yourself and never re-enter the building once you’re outside.
When you’re safely away from danger, call the emergency services and wait for help to arrive.
Make sure everyone in your household knows the escape routes in advance so they can get out quickly and safely.
