Habinteg appoints charity sector Head of Communications

Habinteg’s commitment to creating housing opportunities for disabled people has been strengthened by the recruitment of a Head of Communications, Christina McGill.

The newly created post will help promote Habinteg’s expertise as the leading authority on wheelchair housing design and the Lifetime Homes Standard and as a registered provider of accessible homes and services. Habinteg aims to build on their long established reputation within the sector, taking the organisation’s mission and ethos to a wider audience.

Christina has joined Habinteg from Breast Cancer Care, where she led the communications and marketing teams to raise breast awareness in women over 50 on a range of fundraising, awareness raising and policy campaigns and projects with corporate partners such as Asda and Sony.

Christina has worked in the charity and not for profit sector for most of her career, specialising in media, brand development and internal communications. Her first role in a disability charity was as a PR Officer for Scope, working on campaigns around the Disability Discrimination Act at the time of the inception of the Disability Rights Commission. Christina’s remit was to promote the business case for inclusion within mainstream media, addressing basic disability issues around access. She has also worked to improve the way the media reports on disabled people’s lives – among other things developing a training tool for journalists around use of language.

Christina says, “I’m really happy to be working in the disability field again. I have several family members and friends who use wheelchairs, so it’s a topic very close to my heart. I know there’s lots of amazing work going on here at Habinteg – my job is all about making the most of it to ensure that everyone who could benefit from what we have to offer is aware of what we do.”

Paul Gamble, Chief Executive says, “I am very pleased to welcome Christina to Habinteg. The new post represents a new opportunity for Habinteg in which we can focus on our external profile and reach out to more disabled people needing housing and services. Christina’s skills and expertise are a great fit with the organisation and will help deliver our goals.”
