Let's put a stop to hate crime

12-18 October 2019 is Hate Crime Week, we wanted to assure our tenants that we work closely with the police to support anyone experiencing hate crime in their home or neighbourhood.

What is a hate crime?

A hate crime is when someone commits a crime against you based on your gender identity, disability, race, sexual orientation, religion, or any other perceived difference.

It doesn’t always include physical violence

Someone using offensive language towards you or harassing you because of who you are, or who they think you are, is also a crime. The same goes for someone posting abusive or offensive messages about you online.

What should I do if it happens to me?

If it happens to you, you might be tempted to shrug it off. However, no one should have to experience this. It is important to tell the police so that it can be investigated and stopped from getting worse, find out how you can do this here. If you experience hate crime in your home or neighbourhood, please let us know.

How are crimes investigated?

The circumstances around every crime is unique, so the way crimes are investigated can vary. However, every police investigation will start with the same basic steps so that the police can gather all the relevant information and keep you informed.

We’ve worked with a number of our tenants to help put a stop to hate crime

Recently we had a Community Resolutions order was put in place to stop the hate crime a tenant was experiencing.

A Community Resolution offers Hate Crime victims an informal, flexible response to the reported crime, and allows the victim to have a say in how your matter is dealt with. If the offender doesn’t obey the Community Resolution an injunction can be put in place. If an injunction is not obeyed the offender could get up to two years in prison. This is proving to be the quickest and simplest way to stop hate crime.

We are standing with Stop Hate UK, spreading the message of love and not hate, please join us.
