Anne and Pat moved into their wheelchair bungalow in Weatherly Close along with their brother William when the scheme first opened in 1991. Pat recalls how overjoyed they were when offered the property as life in their previous flat had been difficult for them: "There was so little room that to get into bed Anne had to climb over the wheelchair first!". Pat also found that the layout and design of the property inhibited her independence and privacy. Now thanks to Habinteg she has reclaimed her independence as her wheelchair user's bungalow affords her the space she needs to easily get around her house.
Anne and Pat also feel that they benefit from the security of knowing that their Community Assistant Paul is around to support them whenever they need it. Recently Paul not only used his muscle power to help sort out their sink but was able to advise them on their options for replacing it.
Habinteg's Adaptation service ensured that their new home was fitted with all the equipment they needed before they moved in. However, because the house was already built to allow wheelchair access, Pat said that they didn't require many adaptations to begin with. Most of the mobility restrictions she faced were immediately resolved with the help of Community Assistant, Paul. Unfortunately, this is not always the case when going about day-to-day life. Pat often finds that inaccessible buildings and public transport restrict her independence. Thanks to Habinteg, things are very much easier in and around the home.
