Habinteg launches new Lifetime Homes Design Guide
The first Lifetime Homes Design Guide is now available to buy online through this website. It is based on the 16 Lifetime Homes Design criteria updated in 2010 and was published by Habinteg in partnership with BRE iHS on 4 November 2011. It is a practical guide to the Lifetime Homes Standard and looks at ways that buildings can have more flexibility built in, to enable simple adjustments to be made to cater for a change in a household’s needs.
The Lifetime Homes Standard, which is promoted by Habinteg Housing Association, was established in the 1990s to ensure that new housing caters for the broadest range of needs, and will also enable simple and cost-saving adaptations in the future. The Design Guide gives the technical specification and guidance on the Lifetime Homes design criteria, which follow underlying principles of inclusivity, accessibility, adaptability, sustainability and good value. It maximises utility, independence and quality of life, while not compromising other design issues such as aesthetics or cost effectiveness.
Paul Gamble, Chief Executive at Habinteg said, “As promoters of the Lifetime Homes standard we’re delighted to be bringing out this guidance. We are only too aware of the huge changes taking place currently in the house building and planning arena. But like RIBA, we don’t want the urgent attention on housing supply to endanger the quality of new homes that are built. In an ageing society we cannot afford to waste resources on homes that will not stand the test of time as people require more accessible and adaptable places to live.
We believe that the Lifetime Home Standard is a quality standard that all housing providers should aspire to. This Design Guide is a really practical tool for architects, planners and developers who are committed to best practice in inclusive design and a long term view of development”.
This straightforward design guidance is also a must for social housing providers, social services and home improvement agencies and includes 40 clear, simple line drawings as well as additional good practice recommendations.
